Big Analytic Application and Use Cases

Topic: Big Analytic Application and Use Cases

Session: Big data is ushering in a new era for analytics with large scale data and relatively simple algorithms driving results rather than relying on complex models that use sampled data. Tools are beginning to appear on top of big data platforms, and are being used to great effect in retail, finance, and digital marketing verticals.

This session tackles big data analysis with a practical description of strategies for several classes of application types, identified concretely with use cases. Topics include new approaches to search and recommendation using scalable technologies such as Hadoop, Mahout, & Solr.  Also, graph shaped data use cases are discussed with a description of Titan & Faunus.

Speaker: Brad Anderson is a Solutions Engineer at MapR, has worked with Cascading, Storm, and Titan, and has contributed code to the HBase open-source project. He has wrangled data for 20 years, including working on a large-scale video-on-demand platform in Erlang, helping Cloudant build its hosted NoSQL offering based on CouchDB, and organizing the NoSQL East 2009 conference in Atlanta. Other projects involve smart grid analytics and realtime audience participation systems.  In his free time, Brad enjoys golfing.

Finding the Signal in the Noise

Overview: Data volumes world-wide are expanding exponentially. International Data Corporation (IDC) estimates that by the end of 2015 the digital universe is expected to be 7.9 Zettabytes (7.9 billion terabytes), doubling in size every two years. According to IDC 90% of the data in the enterprise is unstructured. Much of the information that concerns an organization'€™s operations is locked up in this unstructured data, because we have no technology capable of finding useful and meaningful information quickly and reliably in it. Keyword searching is the best known and most widely used tool that executives use today. However keyword searching yields too much data, very little of which is relevant. Currently used methods have very poor fidelity in extracting the meaningful information (signal) from the ocean of useless information (noise).

UX Design in an Agile World

Just as agile development has changed the way we think about creating software, great user experience design has become recognized as a critical component to successfully create usable products and tools. But how do we develop in an iterative fashion without losing sight of the end user, their needs and expectations? How should we start to adapt traditional UX design process and integrate them with agile methodologies? In this presentation, we’ll discuss how to begin including UX design activities and deliverables in the agile development process including lessons learned, best practices and pitfalls to avoid.
